I suspect that AMD got some good info regarding Intels numbers a couple of days ago. They then had a choice: 1)warn ahead and have the stock tank, or 2) wait for Intel to announce a good quarter, see AMDs stock rise with Intels on expectations that AMD did equally well (or better given AMDs guidance)then warn and have it tank from an even higher initial price. Some upgrades as well as a rush of stock purchases may have occurred prior to the tanking in the second case.

I think they choose the better approach, warn before a false runup on Intels results.

This does not excuse their failure to warn a few weeks or even a month ago.

Elmer,

With Intel's strong showing and Bullish forecast, how can AMD not sing the same tune? It would be suicide to be anything but optimistic.

PC (and CPU) business has been doing very well. AMD will most likely be optimistic on CPU, which has been doing great, more than outpacing declines in flash (as it did in Q3 and Q4. Flat or better guidance would be extremely bullish, IMO. Flash will continue to be a problem. AMD will probably say down.

I am slowly coming to conclusion that NOR flash is doomed. I am not entirely sure that the old trick that Intel (and partially AMD) used to utilize old fab/equipment for flash is going to cut it anymore. Samsung is the competitor, and Samsung is by no means behind as far as process node is concerned.

Pravin of course told us that some time ago...
