emedicine.com The speed of the Black Death in the 14th century seems too quick for a rat to flea to human propagation method. Influenza types can propagate that fast, across whole populations in a single season, or maybe two.

The symptoms described seem in part like 1918 influenza symptoms.

Anyway, it shows that 30% mortality megadeath can occur in vulnerable populations and that can happen in 6 months or maybe two flu seasons.

Given that we now have the ability to create vaccines, the effort going into preventing perhaps a billion deaths seems too low.
