The insurgency in Iraq will never be over and the election will be in doubt so long as former Baathist Iraqi officials cause trouble from their safe perch in Syria. The only way to control them is to put pressure on Assad. This explains the Administration' recent threats and the "frank" discussions. Assad will pay if the election is seriously disrupted because of his failure to control the Iraqis he is protecting which, in my opinion, is as it should be.
