Slavery has existed in many cultures. And the motive for the institution in all of them was economic - free labor. The anti-slavery societies, which all had a religious motivation, were unique in our culture.

Without the religiously motivated anti-slavery movement, slavery might well have never ended and you might have grown up in a slave-holding household.
