The problem is if you make a large number of citizens criminals, authorities can arbitrarily enforce the law on selected people for any number of good, bad, or corrupt reasons.

Yep, they can do that. They do that all the time with lots of laws. (I recall the time I sat on a jury where the crime was sodomy, a felony that is charged once in a blue moon.)

During this discussion, as usual, I have been arguing a couple of excesses. The one at issue here is that "they" will take away our guns without the protection of the second amendment. They won't take away our guns because they can't.

Arbitrarily enforcing laws does not equate to taking away our guns.

As for making large number of citizens criminals, almost all of us already are.
