It may have been the generic, impersonal "YOU" that I'd used with him when asking rhetorically about Political Paranoia being classified as a mental illness. From context, that's what I thought was going on but maybe it was a slam, or just a smartaleck remark. He may have well be thinking of his own kids, or someone else's and projecting. Or maybe he was thinking of nobody's kids (most likely and there may have been no thought behind it at all.
