Apple is likely not making much profit on this model Maybe more of a loss leader? 4 - The batteries are rechargeable - All flash players have or can easily adapt to this. not an issue, also many have 18 hour run time. 5 - It works with iTunes - Not a big deal. Easy to transfer files. Many autosysnc with CD and have FM radio. << Don - Of course better looking is an opinion. It is nonetheless a valid observation with respect to the marketability of a product, especially if most people agree with the opinion. I think you'll probably find that most people do agree with me on this. But Don, If you only look at each individual point, you miss the big picture, and thus the overall point. The Shuffle is a beautiful, very small and inexpensive player with rechargeable batteries that has a larger capacity than other available products. Sure, you can get other players that have similar features. Or at least, you can get players that also have some of those individual features. Sure, many of them also have a display. But can you get another mp3 player that is as small, as good looking, has that kind of capacity, includes a rechargeable battery (without requiring an additional charger, by the way) and costs $99? In a word, no. You can't. And as a bonus, the iPod Shuffle works with the world's most popular online music store. It's the combination of all those factors that makes it an improvement. Making choices and combining different elements to create a total package is what design is all about. It's one of the things Apple excels at. - Allen
