Mike, cannot agree more. The US squandered so much money in Iraq for no obvious reason except flexing the muscles.

No, China would not provide an umbrella to other countries except for N. Korea and maybe Myanmar, which China does have some immediate interest<g>. Vietnam is a past thing and I don't think the US will ever bother with them again<g>. But Taiwan is still a big time bomb.

And the US foreign policy, ironically, encourages smaller countries to chase after nuclear weapons. And there might be some for sale in the black market, who knows?
