Russ, The Russian birds are recombinants with parts of their genes from Europe and part from Asia and they probably play a role on getting the info down from Alaska to British Columbia and South America.

Avian flu is literally one flight away from just about anywhere.

However, even more alarming is the inability to even monitor the situation. The WSN/33 sequences have been known for over a month, but still no announcement

and it looks like the meningo-like illness in The Philippines has been around for a year (but has picked up steam in the past month or two

This is a big train wreck that keeps on rolling.

The virus doesn't read press releases and couldn't care less about reassurances or pseudo-preparations.
