I definitely missed the history you are describing, including the commentary in the press. No reason you would have noticed. We who were among the step children noticed. Discussed it quite a bit elsewhere on SI. The commentary in the press could have been under your radar, too. It was never a major news item that I recall, but there were quite a few op-eds grumbling about it. I used to have a collection of posts and columns on the subject in my clip data base but not any more.
