Yes, and if you took that same amount of contributions and invested it in a horizon fund, you'd bring home significantly more than $1,900 per month. So much more that you would consider it a good retirement, not just one that you can barely live on.

CJ, most of the opponents to SS reform say that the benefits are barely enough to keep an elderly citizen above poverty. Check out what Z had to say, for instance:

You talk about Social Security like it's some huge amount of money... it's basically just enough to keep its recipients out of poverty. IMO, NO ONE should be in poverty, I don't care if it's "their own fault" or not.

Personally, I don't mind reduced SS benefits, but we'll need to get our heads out of the sand. And I'm talking both sides of the fence.
