I was a Junior ROTC guy at a military prep school in central Texas. We'd go on occassional day-long training trips to nearby Ft. Hood once or twice a year. I really don't recall which part of the Fort we were sent to.

We all knew intuitively that the rounds overhead were not a problem [we still wondered why it is that we were given double helmets, a liner, I guess, and a really heavy steel pot], but none of us had ever had the experience and we were defintively nervous about it until the first shot passed. After that, all fun and games, especially watching the tanks get blown up.
