The United States is overrun with inefficient vehicles and overbuilt with energy-using structures. The combination could mean inflation of energy prices simultaneously with deflation of vehicle (especially used vehicle) prices and deflation of housing prices. The net effect would be a big decline in real wealth and less spending, especially with the current debt loads. This could mean severe recessions in manufacturing countries that depend on exports to the United States.

Of course, as a person who has zero debt and is heavily invested in energy, as well as holding large bearish positions on the general stock markets, I may be allowing my financial position to determine my view of the world rather than the other way around.
