I think that preventing them from "looking like a winner" takes back seat to crimping cash flow and hence AMD's ability to invest in their CPG infrastructure and R&D.

AMD invested and developed the K7 and K8 architectures largely on borrowed money and money from investors and bond holders.

However, no amount of money can buy the looks of a winner and a company taking market share from the 800lb gorilla.

However, by forcing AMD to miss guidance and possibly return to losses or breakeven suddenly makes AMD look like a shakey company and no longer looks like a winner.

Never underestimate the importance of "looks". After all marketing is all about it!
