What I like about VAT (or high sales tax) is that to some extent it's a voluntary tax. I guess income tax is, too: all you have to do is work less to pay less taxes.

My favorite tax break is picking up pennies off the sidewalk. It takes one second to pick up a penny, meaning you are making $36 an hour free of all taxes, or really about $50 an hour, and you get exercise by bending over. My best coup along that line, though, was finding $2.36 in loose change in the JFK airport that someone apparently abandoned on a table in order to clear security more easily. I used it towards buying a copy of "The Economist" at the newsstand, where they were happy to get the change.
