Population distribution by district as of 1946 - palestineremembered.com

Jewish owned land as of 1947 - palestineremembered.com

Maps page of that site - palestineremembered.com

Being partisan in nature, that site will no doubt be selective with its figures, it may very well lie straight-out on some points ... however, on the basics it can scarcely fail to miss - there was an indigenous population, and then came an invasion ...

these people absolutely opposed the zionist project, as you know, because they could see how it would inevitably lead to sectarian violence

Actually, the situation was much more like we see in Iraq today, a more moderate majority overruled by a violent minority. The Hashemites were okay with Zionism, so were the Jerusalem clan of the Nushishibis; most the people were apolitical as usual and happy to move to the areas of bigger wages and more opportunities next to the Jews. It was the Mufti and his men who violently opposed, and they silenced their Palestinian opposition through a large and vicious campaign of assassinations.

All this stuff about Palestinian nationalism and violent opposition is a rewrite of history by today's Palestinians. Before 1948, the word "Palestinian" referred to the Zionists, there wasn't even a word for the Arabs of Palestine's national movement, because there wasn't much there. If there had been the whole upper class wouldn't have evacuated Palestine before the fighting began.
