14-Jan-05 07:46 ET In Play Sun Microsystems -- color on quarter (SUNW) 4.58 : Analysts are mostly disappointed with the revs as revs declined after 2 qtrs of growth. Morgan Stanley attributes the lack of revs to new products due out over the next several months. While they continue to believe Sun's product cycle could drive improved results later this year, the late qtr availability of product could also impact Mar Q results. Maintains Underweight... CSFB remains concerned that the competitive forces in the enterprise hardware mkt and ongoing mix shifts in Sun's business will weigh on the rev growth needed to unlock meaningful earnings power in the model. Therefore, they reiterate their Underperform rating... UBS however sees some improvement in bookings as Sun's quarterly bookings increased 21% qoq to $3.0 bln with backlog improving to $792 mln, up 20% sequentially... SG Cowen most positive, finds encouragement in 21% sequential Q2 order gain (best in 6 years for a Q2) and 1.05 book/bill heading into Solaris 10 release later this month. In their view, the fair valuation is in the $6.00-6.50 range
