"...and they would prefer to think of homo sapiens as an exhalted being.

You have already conceded that human beings have dominion of the Earth. So what is this new self-hate rant you are running?

Exalted in what sense, morally? Well, that is actually a fair proposition as well. Human beings are the only visible creatures that I am aware of who are able to exercise moral choices. Those who attempt to live honorably are exhaulted above other creatures including those of you who sacrifice honor for petty agendas and materialistic gain. Your honor is tested on a moment to moment basis, such is life.

And anyone who commits an injustice in your presence is attacking your honor. When you enable them to succeed you sacrifice your very soul.

"In any event their real complaint is that evolution throws homo sapiens in the muck with all the other animals, and they would prefer to think of homo sapiens as an exhalted being.

It all comes down to ego."

And you are a proponent of evolution for the simple reason you would like to see people crawl back into the primordial muck from which they emerged. Brilliant...!

I don't want to speculate on what it comes down to because I don't care.

I think belief in a creator, should be compatible with science. After all, belief is more flexible than observations. So you could simply believe that everything science finds, God somehow started, No conflict there. It's not provable, but that's the whole point of faith, I would have thought.

What seems strange to me is trying to jury-rig science to fit with belief, rather than tweaking belief to fit with what we can actually observe, or repeatably demonstrate, or squashing scientific theories that fit what is observed, because they somehow threaten a belief.
