LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Authorities near Los Angeles evacuated more than 840 homes as a dam began leaking under the weight of torrential storm waters that have wrought havoc in California.

Record rainfall in usually dry southern California caused what officials called "seepage" in the Prado Dam near the suburban town of Corona as the water level in the Green River rose.

"The US Army engineers have told us that it is not a leak, it is a seepage," said Mary Ann Skorpanich, spokeswoman for nearby Orange County, where 100 campers were evacuated.

"They have assured us that at this point there is no threat to the public," she added.

Traffic around Corona was heavily backed up as residents fled their homes with whatever belongings they could grab before being evacuated.

Nineteen people are feared dead after a massive mudslide engulfed the small coastal town of La Conchita, northeast of Los Angeles, on Monday, destroying at least 13 homes and damaging 18.

Ten bodies have been recovered from the mud that is now drying, but the effort to rescue the nine people still missing was halted on Thursday after experts said there was little hope for survivors.
