Why are you depressed by the US scoring significantly above the international average in math and science testing of 4th and 8th graders? BTW, where do all the "enlightened" countries like France, Germany and Canada rank? Too low to be willing to participate, apparently. PS: The apparent desire of American education "experts" for all kids to become doctors or engineers is another problem with our education system. The humanities and social sciences get short shrift, and kids grow up not knowing our history, the world's history, how our government and economy work, how to construct a proper sentence or logical argument, or how to critically analyze a problem or another's argument. But they can make their computers do really cool things.
