Pope gets Ferrari of his own

Mon Jan 17, 9:27 AM ET

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) has received a flame red Ferrari from the Italian world championship racing team -- a model of one, that is -- for having what they said was the inside track on the roads of humanity.

Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher and the rest of the Ferrari team met the Pope in the Vatican (news - web sites)'s frescoed Clementina Hall on Monday to give him the 1:5 scale model of the car that won both the championship and constructor titles in 2004.

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo told the Pope Ferrari drivers, mechanics and management wanted to honour him because his courage and defence of human rights had put him "for the past 26 years in the pole position of the roads of humanity".

Pole position refers to the most favourable position at the start of a race, given to the fastest car.

"It is the first time that one of our cars -- even though it is a model -- has entered the Vatican," Montezemolo told the Pope. "We consider this the most prestigious finishing line for us. We feel like you are one of us and we thank you for the example you have given."

There was a poignant contrast between the speed represented by the model car whose real version can reach 350 kph (218 mph) and the slow movement of the 84-year-old Pope, who no longer walks and was wheeled into the room on a special chair.

But an emotional Schumacher later told reporters he found inspiration from being close to the Pope and from seeing how he copes with the debilitating effects of Parkinson's disease (news - web sites) and severe arthritis.

"It was very special to see his force and his personality," Schumacher said. "It is something great for us to have been here and hopefully to take all the emotions into the future for us and transmit it into motivation and obviously success as well."

F1 team bossJean Todt said he was moved "to silence by the energy, simplicity and humility" the Pope manages to relay despite his illnesses.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, Schumacher's teammate and a devout Catholic, brought a picture of his family and asked the Pope to bless it.

"This is something you dream of when you are a kid and think it's impossible ... but now it has come true," Barrichello said.

In his address the Pope, who rode in a real Ferrari when he visited the carmaker's plant in 1988, told the group sports was important for all of society and could spread values such as solidarity among peoples and nations.

Todt, whose father was a Jewish refugee from the Pope's native Poland, said Ferrari would put a special edition of one of its cars up for auction in May and give the proceeds to charity in the Pope's honour.

Mistake Leads to Cremation of Wrong Body

Wed Jan 19, 4:59 PM ET Strange News - AP

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An autopsy technician misread a number on a body tag, leaving one family without a body to memorialize and another with the wrong person's ashes scattered across the Atlantic Ocean.

As a result of the mistaken identification, the technician released the body of John Chappell, 36, instead of that of Judith Perez, 65, said Duval County Chief Medical Examiner Margarita Arruza.

"It was off by one digit. He released the wrong body to the funeral home, and obviously the funeral home never checked or looked at the body," she said. She said the technician is no longer employed by her office.

Perez's family had the body cremated and scattered the ashes in the ocean before the mistake was discovered when Chappell's relatives showed up to claim his body.

Chappell's brother in Jacksonville and sister in Mt. Morris, Mich., have notified the city of their intent to sue for negligence, said their attorney, Henry Gare.

"It is a very heartbreaking situation," Gare said Wednesday.

Gare said the family had planned to scatter Chappell's ashes at his grandfather's grave in Michigan.

A woman who answered the telephone at Green Pine Funeral Home in Yulee and refused to give her name said Chappell's body was received in a bag identified as Perez's remains. Because the body was cremated, she said there was no reason to open the bag.

Arruza said she doesn't remember her office mixing up any bodies since she joined the office in 1989.

Man Holds Up Sex Shop, Steals Inflatable Doll

Thu Jan 20,10:04 AM ET Oddly Enough - Reuters

MILAN (Reuters) - He shouldn't be hard to spot.

Police are searching for a pistol-wielding robber who stole female leather bondage gear and an inflatable sex doll from an erotica store in Milan Wednesday.

The clerk at the "Night Shop" speculated that the kinky crook might have been unsatisfied with the payout of his hold-up, which only yielded him about 60 euros ($78).

"There was just a little cash," the clerk, who declined to be named, told Reuters by telephone.

"Then he took some stuff ... an inflatable doll and a leather outfit for a woman," he said.
