actually, i could never see why they were so successful since they aren't even the best yuppie health food store in their home town. those honors go to H.E.B. Central Market, an offshoot of H.E.B. (the dominant supermarket chain in this part of Texas).

Regarding the Pearl District, I don't think those folks are hurting yet. Median real estate price up 8.9 percent year on year in metropolitan Portland, and mean price up 10 percent, at least according to one realtor's website.

What I hear anecdotally in the gym (in the Pearl District) is that the appreciation has been greater in that neighborhood than elsewhere.

I don't see how it can continue for long. There is a weak local job picture, and continuous building of more and more very expensive units, not to mention rising interest rates and the rest of the macro-economics.

But then again, I've been thinking for a long time that this can't continue...
