Yes, I know. Social Security is run like an insurance program, but it sure is a horribly inefficient insurance program. If Americans really wanted this kind of insurance, Warren Buffett would be happy to provide them insurance at rates much cheaper than social security and the benefits would likely be much higher.

So we need to think long and hard about how effective social security is. To most people who know anything about finance, it is far less adequate than we all deserve. I think clinging to social security is like clinging to your belief that mediocrity is better than taking a little bit of risk to gain something better for yourself.
