. Cracking down on them may come some day but the first step is to get them do enter into a cease fire. Then progress in talks and growing power of the PA can begin to manifest itself in the ability of Abbas police to stop the terrorists if they resume their evil ways

So far, Abbas has neither done this nor even announced an intention to do this. If we weren't coming off the last four years, Sharon might be able to give him some space and benefit of the doubt but as it is, he cannot just ignore Hizbullah-style attacks like yesterday's at Karni crossing, which would accept a reversion to the Israeli policy of 2000 and 2001, which gave the PA a free pass on attacks, because they were a "peace partner" and were pretending that the attacks were nothing to do with them.

Sharon hasn't got any free passes left to hand out, and he cannot disengage from Gaza unless the PA makes an effort to take control. If the PA just accepts that Gaza turns into another Lebanon under Hamas & Hizbullah, then all bets are off, imo.

We will soon see if Abbas has the guts to blame Hamas/Hizbullah/Fatah for the suffering they just inflicted on Gaza by blowing up Karni and closing the last goods transport channel. If he has the guts to blame the attackers, who include members of his own party Fatah, then that's a good sign. If he just reverts to blaming Israel for everything, it's business as usual.
