Democrats are the party of the liberals. That's not just marketing. It's fact. Democrats believe in abortion, gay marriage, socialism wrt social security, small military, and heavy expenditures on environment. These are the bulwarks of liberals.

And this time around, those values didn't appeal to the majority of Americans.
