Maybe. Sharon is known to be wily. But Sharon, as the architect of the push for the settlements, probably understands most what the settlements have cost Israel. That is the thing about the governed. They expect their leaders to never waver from a course once that course is chosen. But good leaders change their minds occassionally, when they realize that a decision turned out not to be in the best interests of the governed. Based on Sharon's actions, it appears that he has reached that crossroads. He has risked his political career to push his Gaza withdrawal plan. That counts for something.

What I believe is that the US is placing huge pressure on Sharon to work things out with the Palestinians. A major bone of contention between the US and Sharon [and the Palestinians] has been the settlements in the occupied territories. Gaza is the easiest one to give up from an Israeli strategic perspective. I think you will not see such a major pullback from the WB as well as no change in the suburban sprawl outside East Jerusalem. In fact I expect E. Jerusalem to continue to grow in the WB.

To justify his approach, Sharon will make Abbas into a bad guy like he did with Arafat. I believe Sharon is very wily as you said and plays a very complicated game with the Palestinians, and has no intention of giving the Palestinians their freedom as he has said publicly on a number of occasions.

And like Z said, nothing really changes.......just the characters in this elaborate game.
