The sixties were a period of great wealth creation and resource waste. Only a man like Kennedy, and a death like Kennedy's could have created a program like Apollo. Our generation is doing ok. You are correct that we dropped the ball on great scientific endeavors. We did build incrementally though. Maybe we can restart the manned exploration of space the right way. We have to stop the wasteful launch practices. We need better more efficient lift vehicles.

My point was that we need to build a system that can be utilized for more than forty years. We can build a combo of vehicles from one launch system. With a launch system that has both people transports and stuff transports built from the same foundation, we can be more efficient. The Shuttle was a comedy of compromises. Learn from our mistakes and build from what we have learned. (It is easier to improve the wheel than to invent a Humvee.)
