Stock Market Challenge To Punters

The London Stock Exchange is putting up £100,000 to find the most successful private investors in the UK.

The stock-picking competition will see competitors in 10 regional heats given a notional £50,000 to invest in ten shares.

While investors will not actually gain their winnings, 10 winners from each region will have the chance to compete for a £40,000 national prize.

The best regional dealers will receive £5,000 and there will be two national runners-up prizes of £5,000, giving total prize money of £100,000.

"It gives a real incentive for people all over the country to join in and show the City it doesn't have a monopoly on investment know-how," LSE chief executive Clara Furse said.

The regional part of InvestaQUEST will last five months.

Entrants will have to pick 10 stocks, including one from their home region.

Those who go through to the four-week final will choose another 10 shares.

During the course of the contest, which is being launched in association with Barclays Stockbrokers, competitors will be able to make 20 "substitutions".

The site, www.investaquest.com, will give the latest prices and share news and will allow entrants to watch their rivals' progress.

The deadline for entries is March 4 and the national final will end in November.
