What do you think makes someone into an enemy? Is it always just some quirk of them, or does it sometimes reflect what you might have done to them? Generally it is rooted in conflicting interests and/or conflicting ideologies. Either will do. What has A done to B? is generally the wrong question to ask. In the case of AQ, they have a serious existential headache with the success of the West, which is opposed to their faith as they interpret it.
