It is simply pratice. However I agree that there isn't a whole lot to be learned there with the exception of how to construct temp quarters that can be expanded.

No real acheivement is space travel will be made using the same old engines.

I don't see anything to be gained on Mars.

Perhaps the survival of mankind is worth the price of admission. Survival is enhanced by diversity. There are some pretty crazed whackos roaming around the earth who think that the destruction of mankind will win them a place with a bunch of virgins for eternity.
