As to: US airlifting AQ fighters out of Afghanistan into Pakistan in a New Yorker report he wrote during the Afghan war

I recall that it was Pakistani Army "advisors" and/or ISI officers that were airlifted out of Afghanistan, with US air clearance. Which I don't doubt for a second. The Taliban were Pakistani Frankenstein's Monsters, after all. And Pakistani intel officers being captured amonst the Talibs and AQ would be embarrassing for our ally, at best.
