I recall that it was Pakistani Army "advisors" and/or ISI officers that were airlifted out of Afghanistan, with US air clearance.

That's almost the way I remember it, although the flavor I got was that the US was more along the lines of deliberately allowing itself to be snookered or looking the other way, more like "wink-wink-say-no-more." Definitely not assisting actively.

And of course it could have gone another way -- we would have wanted the Pakis out so they couldn't help the Taliban, but who knows whether they were welcomed with open arms when they got back to Pakistan? Musharraf doesn't always have a clear coast, they've tried to kill him before (Islamists).
