Let me put it this way. I believe that there are many, many sources of information about American culture other than the Bible

That is true and people should be familiar with many of them as well. Neither Lindy Bill nor the author of the blog post at the American Scene which Bill quoted, said anything that indicated some sort of primacy of the Bible over other important parts of American culture. The author just expressed (and Bill quoted and probably agrees with the expression) that if one is going to claim to have a strong knowledge of American culture one should be at least minimally familiar with the Bible. You might expand that to include the fact that one should be at least minimally familiar with many other things from jazz to baseball to knowledge about the political and constitutional history of our country.

According to one study, Shakespeare’s plays include quotations or references from more than 40 books of the Bible. For example, in the comedy As You Like It, one character compares a group of couples about to be married to the pairs of animals rescued by Noah from the Great Flood: “There is sure another flood toward, and these..

Almost all of our classical literature is filled with references that would be obscoure if you didn't know the bible.
