To the TV nation, the Republicans succeeded in making gays, guns and God more relevant than a war launched for totally fictional reasons with no end in sight and an economy seemingly stuck in perpetual neutral. They made a war hero seem less patriotic than a war avoider. You've got to give them credit - no one ever went broke (or lost an election) underestimating the intelligence of the American people.
