LONDON — Despite ASML Holding NV (Veldhoven, The Netherlands) turning in its best set of results for five quarters, analysts were dismayed at how the company's order book had shrunk from three months ago, according to reports.

The order backlog as of Dec. 31, 2004, comprised 131 lithography systems valued by ASML at 1,691 million euro (about $2.21 billion), in its results published Wednesday (Jan. 19). Of that backlog, ASML plans to ship 60 systems in Q1 2005 with an expected average selling price of approximately 10.7 million euro.

However, according to reports Wednesday (Jan. 19), of the 131 systems about 119 are new systems. These figures compare with a backlog of 183 lithography systems worth 2 billion euros on Sept. 26 (about $2.6 billion at present euro-dollar exchange rates), of which 162 were new tools.

Analysts had expected AMSL to post a backlog of about 170 machines instead of 131 actually posted, of which about 157 machines would be for new equipment, instead of 119 actually posted, reports said.

"With the systems they expect to ship in the first quarter, I fear the second quarter will hurt for ASML," a Bloomberg report quoted a financial analyst as saying.

ASML's shares were reported to have fallen 2.2 percent at 11.42 euros at the start of trading in Amsterdam, on Wednesday morning.
