Holding the Jews up to an unattainable standard, while ignoring the context of their actions, is an old trope of anti-Semitism. It has just regained respectibility in the guise of anti-Zionism, aided by all the post-colonial guilt and multi-culti mush-headedness going on in Europe. I don't think the Pals understood enough of it to plan to take advantage of it, they were just smart enough to know a good thing when they saw it, and to keep doing what worked. Sometimes I think that the Pals are as smart in PR as they are stupid in politics, and that is saying something. And for the Israelis, vice-versa.
