The Observatoire Royal de Belgique was our local source/expert the media (TVs, newspapers,...) tapped for scientific explanations about the tsunami... I guess US media likewise interviewed geonerds from the USGS. But let's face it, Searle: those geohacks are not trustworthy, their scientific integrity being hostage to the government that pays them!

Suppose you're one of those geophysics PhDs working for a government agency: if you don't toe the official line, if you start blabbing about nuclear explosions then you're sacked the next day... what's your "career prospects" henceforth? Teaching geography to high-school dunces? Flipping burgers at the local McDonald's? I don't think most Fortune500 corporations are desperate to hire geophysicists....
