I agree with your... Condi is smart assessment. And I also believe she is well qualified for the job.

My point is that in a "beat the drums of war" climate we do need some battlefield experience at the highest levels and particularly in the cabinet. Not because they are likely hawks (though some are), but because they will be reluctant to get into war or expand war without absolutely clear provocation and even then only as a last resort.

Presidents JFK and LBJ filled their cabinets with (inexperienced but so-called brilliant) hawks too. It proved to be a terrible mistake.

Ah, so. As I recall, this is the same crap they tried to throw at Bush in 2000. "He doesn't have gravitas."

Guess what? Bush showed a hell of a lot of "gravitas" and some balls too, after 9/11. I suspect Rice will do the same (absent the balls, of course).
