I've bought things ranging from dog flea preventative to auto parts (new and used) on eBay and been very satisfied with price and transactions. It's important to check out the seller's feedback rating and look at shipping/handling charges before bidding.

I imagine there might be some categories of things that might not be as eBay-prone to marketing as others, e.g. direct-to-purchaser Dell. I don't see ever buying a new Dell PC from anyone other than Dell, whose direct model is hard to beat. It would seem that a reseller would have to buy huge volume to get a price break, eliminating custom options and adding to shipping charges (double shipments: dell-middleman-end user).
