We've had about 3 days of sun. It's getting overcast, but they aren't saying anything about rain. We got a lot earlier in the month, but I think we are still behind.

Hung pulled out all the stops to get our well sponsors out to their project..and this is their email to me:

When I thought of traveling to the well that we sponsored at a
school for several minority villages in the highlands of Viet
Nam I expected to get to Da Lat, meet with Hung Nguyen and
travel to the well some morning.... easy....

I have just returned from visiting the school, the villages and
the well...the water is running and the kids are like kids
everywhere....

But to get from Da Lat to there, which is not open to tourists,
took several days attempting to obtain permission from the
police... an appeal from the local Buddhist organization...
copies of passports... a Buddhist monk to ride with us and
document the trip and write an article in the newspaper thanking
the government, a formal sealed letter from the president of
this province police hand delivered by us to the president of
the Ta Nang province police, police escorts and a personal
meeting with the local police and the highest ranking communist
in the province where the well is located.

I will write more when my thoughts and feelings have settled and
distilled...

My response:

Hello Cheryl & Chuck,

I'm sorry the government there made it so difficult to get out and see your well. If I had known they would make it difficult, I would have told you. This is all new.......this has not happened before, that government makes up the rules as they go along. At least you have gotten an insight into what it takes to get these projects built, and imagine what it is like to live under that kind of oppression. Isn't it amazing the lengths at which the government there will go to keep the minorities isolated and destitute? Of course they will be rebellious.

The important thing is that your well is up and operating, helping those that really needed your help. I hope you take great satisfaction in that.

We have just been informed that we will not be allowed to go visit any of the wells we have built, either....period. Of course they say that if we start depositing our construction funds with the government, we will be able to continue on. But before building a project, we will have to apply to the government to get our funds....that is not going to happen. You see, this was all a play to steal our funding money, which we will not allow to happen. After a period of time, they will realize that and allow us to go back to work, because they really do want us to build these projects.

I know you are exasperated at what it took to get out to see the project, I'm sorry about that. Please appreciate the lengths to which Hung went to make it happen. I'm sure you know how angry and upset he is that this happened.

My apologies for the hassles you endured, but please be proud that your project is up and operating and helping people every day. You get to travel on, and go home, but the villagers will continue to live under that cloud.

Thank you,

Scott Mantz
