I have read that this was a function of the high rates of land abandonment under the Ottomans due to their high taxation rates and general misrule." Some folks may think that land values in palestine back then appreciate as they do in parts of the US today. People forget that for millions upon millions of people landholding can be more of a curse than a reward.
