When we were at war during WWII, citizens were asked to make personal sacrifices in their everyday lifestyles to conserve and devote resources and materiel to the war effort. E.G. tires, rubber, just about everything.

That's not the case now, and that's the difference. Don't make it into something it isn't.

In 1865, towards the end of the bloodiest, nastiest, most divisive war in American history, President Abraham Lincoln threw a large ball following his inauguration. Do you think "inappropriate" too?

Heard on the radio: "If George Bush put a 22 caliber pistol in his mouth and pulled the trigger, 49% of the country would complain that he didn't use a big enough bullet." You think maybe a whole bunch of them are on this site? That NO MATTER what GWB does, by them he is wrong?

If THAT is the case, why worry what they think or say?

Here:
MOST EXTRAVAGANT: The most lavish inauguration was for Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. An exact replica of Federal Hall in New York, costing $100,000 – an extravagant sum for the Depression years – was built on the White House lawn as a reviewing stand.

PARADES: The lengthiest parade was for Abraham Lincoln in 1865, celebrating the end of the Civil War and lasting two days. The longest parade was in 1953, for Dwight Eisenhower. It featured elephants, dog acts, trained seals, 73 bands and 59 floats, including a replica of the cottage in which he was born.

FDR? The Great Depression was at its worst when he was inaugurated.

The Korean War was rather vicious when Ike was inaugurated.

What say you of them?
