When I was in the Navy, I was actually always shore duty.

There were about 2-3% of the people that seemed to be gay. For those that dared to consider initiating contact of this type with someone, it was a very large personal risk, both socially and professionally. Quite honestly, most of the guys that were considered gay, had a very, very tough time of it because it was technically as illegal as being a drug user. I think the social stigma was worse, but not being gay, I was only able to see this externally. When it was going around through the rumor mill that so-and-so was gay, I didn't participate in the rumormongering. I felt compassion for these guys.
