re: OK, it's a free lunch to those who are receiving more than they put in.

A partial free lunch, maybe a free snack?

If you have insurance and never make a claim, are the other folks that do make claims getting a "free lunch"? Who is better off, the people who make claims or the people that don't have to?

Since I have no kids and pay taxes to support the schools, are the people with kids getting a "free lunch"?

It's a social compact, one of the most fair. At birth, nobody knows who is going to have the most "chips" when they retire. You may pay more than you receive, you may receive more than you pay. You may be disabled in an auto accident tomorrow, and never be able to work again. Or you may win the lottery.

re: Someone is going to be left holding the bag.

Not really. It's a sustainable program that needs periodic tweaks. Just as every budget item needs periodic tweaks, even in personal finance.

But it sure is a red flag issue, and one that prompts partisan lying and exaggeration. Bush is waving that red flag with vigor, and his rank and file are getting fired up.
