SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The number of rigs drilling for oil and natural gas in North America increased by 53 to 1,859 in the week ended Jan. 21, according to the latest update issued Friday by Baker Hughes Inc.

Compared to the prior week, the U.S. rig count rose by five to 1,263, while Canadian rigs increased by 48 to 596.

The overall North American rig count increased by 196, or 11.8 percent, compared with the same week a year ago, with the U.S. tally rising by 176 and the Canadian count up by 20.

Baker Hughes (BHI: news, chart, profile) , a Houston-based oilfield products and services provider, said the number of U.S. rigs drilling for oil rose to 177, up five from last week. Last year, domestic oil rigs totaled 137.

The number of rigs drilling for natural gas rose remained at 1,084 from last week. A year ago, there were 946 such rigs operating in the U.S.
