Doesn't seem OT to me.

Warren Buffet keeps pointing out how the taxes on his home in Omaha are more than on a house he owns in California, though the Omaha house would sell for a small faction of the latter.

I guess when California and its communities start defaulting on their bonds and can't borrow any more, there may be some changes.

As far as I can remember, the last really intelligent thing that anyone did with the U. S. tax system was Jimmy Carter's plan for energy-saving tax credits. There were millions of people too stupid or lazy even to put some insulation in their attics, but with a tax credit to pay for it, they did, and it made a huge difference in energy savings.

The United States is the most profligate society there has ever been. Newly arrived immigrants are astounded at the waste. You can furnish a house with what people put out on their curbs and burn what you don't use in a wood stove.
