R&D and advertising (part of MG&A) are not included in COGS, and so do not affect GMs. They do affect op income, and thus PMs.

The wafer cost includes depreciation and other fab expenses. The R&D is spread across 100s of millions of parts and exactly which column a couple of bucks goes into is not an argument I wish to get into.
