Probably as well as trying to steer everyone to Itanium first.
As it is, apart from low-power mobile, they got the timing right. AMD will have only one real but important advantage from AMD64 and that is continuity and establishment of the ISA they created. Other than that it's the same old x86 ding-dong battles ;-). 2005 should be a good year for AMD, Intel and MS with WinX64 and dual-cores and should kick demand above the usual patterns.
