While it is a possible speculation based on what they looked at, another hypothesis would be easier to understand for me: Intel is significantly ahead in mask alignment-precision. Evidence claimed in the article at least would require some substantiation by means of identical tools used for mask alignment. Intel is usually a generation ahead of others in this respect. It is one of the ingredients of the recipe for its industry leading gross margins. Hard to imagine they would achieve it with just average manufacturing technology, which the author's speculation somewhat implies.
