Got it!

miles driven per capita:
US 5730
Canada 3685
oecdwash.org
216.239.63.104

US traffic deaths were 41,741 in 1998.
usroads.com

5730/3685 = 1.55 times as many in US

41741/30000 =1.39, about the same, US a bit safer. Probably weather-related.

So Canadians drive fewer miles per capita and have fewer total accidents in proportion. Makes sense. With the weather you have, it's amazing you can get around at all! :-)

See bottom chart. We outwork you. And not surprisingly, EVERYBODY outworks the French!

Other matters of interest:

Note correlation between GDP and VMT (vehicle mileage total).

Last chart - greenhouse gas emission - note Canada is equal to US per capita.

* With about 5 percent of the world's population, the United States accounts for about 23 percent of the globe's emissions of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. Canada accounts for about 2.5 percent of emissions.

Canada has about 10% of US population, so is on par for production of greenhouse gases.

Every province has different rules. In Manitoba, you loose your car if you are caught over .05!
During Prohibition in the US, if you were caught with alcohol in your car, the car was confiscated. We fortunately recovered from that insanity, but not before making several Canadian distilerries. :-)

But with much better health care:)
After this demo? If I were you, I'd concede the issue!

About that CDP-VMT correlation: the bad news.

World oil reserves, production, and consumption
scaruffi.com
Note that the US is #12 in reserves but #2 in production and #1 in consumption.

Note Lukoil, Yukos, and Gazprom, all Russian companies, are the top 3 in reserves.

The USA imports about 55% of its oil needs.

Sources of U.S. Oil Imports (millions of barrels per day, 2001): Canada: 1.79 - Saudi Arabia: 1.66 - Venezuela: 1.54 - Mexico: 1.42 - Nigeria: .86 - Iraq: .78 - Norway: .33 - Angola: .32 - United Kingdom: .31 - Total: 11.62. (Source: Energy Information Administration).

Sources of U.S. Oil Imports (%, 2002): Saudi Arabia: 16.9% - Mexico: 15.1% - Canada: 15.0% - Venezuela: 14.4% - Iraq: 11.4% - Nigeria: 5.9.%.

only about 30% of the USA's oil imports came from Arab countries in 2002. Since USA oil imports are about 55% of USA oil consumption, only about 15% of USA's oil consumption is provided by Arab countries.

About 40% of oil in the USA is used to produce gasoline
